Gwyn Morgan Named Most Respected CEO by Peers

Dominic D’Alessandro moves to second place

(Toronto, Tuesday, January 31, 2006) – Canada's top CEOs agree that Gwyn Morgan, former President and CEO of EnCana Corporation, is the Most Respected CEO among his peers in 2005, according to the 11th Annual Canada's Most Respected Corporations Survey. The survey, conducted by Ipsos Reid and sponsored by KPMG, asks 250 of Canada’s leading CEOs to indicate which corporations they most respect in eight categories. Mr. Morgan usurped Manulife Financial Corporation’s Dominic D’Alessandro, who came in second, by a narrow margin. Following closely behind these top two CEO’s are Gordon Nixon (RBC Financial Group), Clive J. Beddoe (WestJet Airlines), and Ed Clark (TD Financial Group).

“According to their peers, these CEOs embody the qualities of vision, focus, discipline, and good strategy,” said Bill Dillabough, Managing Partner, Markets, KPMG. “Clearly, these are among the qualities that Canada’s CEOs respect most in their colleagues, but they are also the traits they value and strive to achieve themselves.”

Much like last year, “vision, focus, discipline, and good strategy” (24 per cent) remain the most respected attributes, while the next most respected attributes mentioned by CEOs, ‘corporate governance, and leadership’ were up four points from the previous year, to 22 per cent, and jumped from its previous rank of seventh place among all attributes.

“Mr. Morgan’s success is no surprise given the impressive track record he has demonstrated during his tenure as EnCana’s CEO over the years,” said John Wright, Senior Vice President, Ipsos Reid.

A listing of some of the other more notable attributes of Canada’s Top CEOs and their ranking is as follows:

About the Survey

This report outlines the findings from the 11th Annual Canada’s Most Respected Corporations Survey sponsored by KPMG and conducted by Ipsos Reid. The survey was conducted between October and November, 2005. The survey involved interviews of 250 of the leading CEOs in Canada either by telephone, fax or on-line. Interviewees were selected at random from the Report on Business Public 1000, Private 300 and the Financial Post 500 Rankings for 2005.

For the overall Honour Roll scoring, a system was used that gave companies three points for each time they were the first mention in a given performance category (there were eight performance categories: Best Long Term Investment Value, Innovation and Product/Service Development, Human Resources Management, Financial Performance, Corporate Social Responsibility, High Quality Service/Product, Corporate Governance, and Customer Service), two points for each second place showing, and one point for a third place mention. An additional three points were attributed to firms cited in a specific question in which CEOs were asked to name their Top-of-Mind Most Respected company. The final vote tally for each firm is the sum of these points (a total of nine measures), which determines each company’s overall score.
